TJ’s WIP: Tiny Robot Loves Nature.
We’re going to stare at a tiny robot today!
I mean that in the most innocent way possible…
Who else loves robots? *raises hands in the air* Yep, me too. I showed a bunch of little bots a while back and then I hopped to a different theme. The robots stayed on my mind though, especially this one:
The idea of putting a tiny robot in nature made me very curious. What would his story be? Who would he meet? I already know who he would meet, but I will tell you more about this another time (it’s part of a bigger personal project). For now, let’s stare at the tiny robot, surrounded by little butterflies and flowers. I so wonder where’s he skipping off too. Do you have an idea?
The idea for this piece just popped in my head. I had a piece of watercolor paper in shades of yellow and green on my desk for days. I mindlessly painted the paper and at first I wanted to go for a fashion illustration with a twist. But then a tiny bot twirled around in my imagination and I decided to go with that one.
That pose makes me laugh every time. I keep seeing Jack Sparrow in my mind. Who else sees Jack? Am I the only one…?
This aside. While the background is still a bit wet, I add the trees in the distance with a script brush. Parts of the stroke will blend with the layer below, other parts not. It’s like a misty illusion!
This process is repeated for two to three layers. Of course I’m not forgetting the tiny robot either. Below you can see how the misty trees shine through the layer I added on top of it.
It’s very easy to go overboard with the paint layers and like I told in my previous post, there’s always that magical moment where the piece suddenly comes together. So I have to keep a close eye on it and as soon as I start wondering if it’s done, it’s usually done. Then it looks like this:
After scanning it in and a quick edit in Photoshop we end up with this!
Ah I know for a fact that you’ll be seeing this little guy a lot more soon. And let me know if you like robots!
Little side ramble. There’s an animation called, Robots (I know. Very straight to the point…) and it’s by Blue Sky Studios (released in 2005). I had never heard of it until I was looking for new animations to watch (which I do all the time. It holds my attention more than regular movies). If you haven’t seen it, try to find it. It’s a fun little movie for anyone that loves robots!
